The history of the Alfa Romeo ES 30 SZ / RZ

Following the takeover by Fiat in 1986, the Alfa Romeo ES 30 was intended to show the world that the brand had not lost its exclusivity and technical prowess. The extraordinary body shape was the result of a collaboration between the design centres of Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Zagato – with the basic design concept originating from the French designer Robert Opron. The Alfa Romeo SZ made its debut in March 1989 at the Geneva Motor Show.

Alfa Romeo SZ – Sprint Zagato (1989–1992)

The closed-top Alfa Romeo SZ coupé captivated with its distinctive wedge shape and characteristic three-eyed headlights. Available exclusively in Alfa Rosso, the body was made from glass-fibre-reinforced methacrylic resin (Modar) – a state-of-the-art material at the time. It was powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 210 hp and capable of a top speed of 245 km/h.

The Alfa Romeo RZ was unveiled in autumn 1992 at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris as an open-top version of the SZ. With significant body reinforcements, a more gently sloping windscreen and a weight 120 kg heavier, the RZ was a vehicle in its own right. It was available in red, yellow, black and, very rarely, in silver metallic paint.
