The history of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Type 116

In autumn 1977, Alfa Romeo unveiled the Giulietta (Type 116) as the successor to the Giulia saloon. The wedge-shaped design, featuring a flat front, rising side lines and a high rear, created by Ermanno Cressoni at Alfa Romeo’s Centro Stile, was the subject of heated debate among contemporaries. With the benefit of hindsight, however, it is clear that the design anticipated many design elements that are now considered standard in saloon design. Production ceased at the end of 1985 – the technically identical Alfa Romeo 75 took its place as the successor.
